Fundraising Story

UNCLE SHABIR GOES VEGAN FOR GAZA

Cllr Shabir Fazal OBE (Hyndburn Muslim Green Councillor) is a retired Headmaster and grandfather of 15.

His dedication to his local community, wider ummah and humanity led him to join the Green Party and advocate for the Palestinian cause.

This Veganuary, he has accepted the challenge from Muslim Greens and Greens4Palestine: giving up meat and all animal related products, to raise awareness of the Palestinian cause and raise money for essential projects in Gaza.

Shabir has become well known to vegans with his refrain 'Vegans don't live longer, it just feels longer'. He has begrudgingly agreed to this with the caveat we raise £1000 before January 1st 2025.

If we reach weekly targets of £1000, he will release a videoblog each week, documenting his struggles.

Uncle Shabir has chosen to fundraise for SWAN!

SWAN is a UK registered charity (1188649) that endeavors to provide our beneficiaries in the UK and abroad with the basic essentials that all living beings are entitled to and should have such as food, water and shelter through our different projects tailored to the needs in those areas. SWAN IN GAZA

SWAN have been working in Gaza since 2021 and currently work with multiple partners in Gaza. We were working there before October 7th 2023 by providing monthly food packs for widows and children and regular aid through the Great Mosque in Gaza.

We have a field hospital in Gaza as well as many other projects with the aim to fulfil our mission of ensuring all humans access human rights of food, water, shelter and medical aid.

In response to the ongoing catastrophic events in Gaza, SWAN have obtained a special license allowing us to take in aid and distribute on the ground. Since October 7th 2023, SWAN has worked to provide aid in Gaza. Conflict began since an incident in the disputed territory leading to hostages taken by both sides and a war beginning. Civilian death toll of children and adults is extremely high. Aid and water is rare to come by.

Currently we are working on the following projects in the respective areas:

In North Gaza:

  • Weekly Water Tankers £1200 a water tanker
  • Solar powered well Building £14,000 for the well
  • Nursing Mothers Monthly Food pack £100 for 20 days food pack

In Southern Gaza:

  • Weekly Water Tankers £1200 a water tanker
  • Essential aid of food parcels £100 food packs
  • Field Hospital in Khan Younis £120,000 for building costs and further £50,000 for equipment. We are now further extending the hospital for 4 rooms at £50,000. Learn more here : https://www.swanlondon.org/appeal/gazafieldhospital
  • Monthly grant support for 20 extremely vulnerable families in the form of grants to cover food, medicine and other costs.

We hold a UK license to operate in Palestine. We utilise various entry points. We used to deliver via the Rafah crossing but that has been demolished. We now access supplies from the Westbank, through Israel and via Jordan.

Our current donation projects include

  • Food packs - £100
  • Hygiene Pack - £30
  • Water for a family - £20
  • Hot meals - £5 a meal

Join us in our mission to alleviate the suffering of our brothers and sisters in Gaza. Your support is crucial in providing essential aid to those who need it most during these challenging times. Donate now to make a meaningful impact and help us provide urgent aid to Gaza.

Together, let's stand in solidarity with the people of Gaza and ensure they receive the support and assistance they urgently require. Your generosity can make a world of difference.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. Does my entire donated amount go to Gaza?

Yes, 100% of your donations directly benefit the beneficiaries in Gaza.

2. How do you gain access to Gaza?

We hold a UK license to operate in Palestine. We utilise various entry points. We used to deliver via the Rafah crossing but that has been demolished. We now access supplies from the Westbank, through Israel and via Jordan. We are able to buy items intended for aid in Gaza and transport to the points we are distributing at.

We also have a coordinator who is currently operating inside Gaza with permission from the UK.

3. Can you provide evidence of your operations

Certainly. We document our aid distributions extensively, including footage of trucks entering Gaza and the distribution of aid on our social media channels. All our work is transparent, and we report via video footage within 14 days of funds being sent for a project.

4. Where specifically in Gaza do you operate?

Currently we are working on the following projects in the respective areas:

In North Gaza:

  1. Weekly Water Tankers
  2. Solar powered well Building
  3. Nursing Mothers Monthly Food pack

In Southern Gaza:

  • Weekly Water Tankers
  • Essential aid of food parcels
  • Field Hospital in Khan Younis
  • Monthly grant support for 20 extremely vulnerable families in the form of grants to cover food, medicine and other costs.

5. Who are our partners in Gaza?

In South Gaza:

  • Alaanqa Association
  • Rivers of Mercy
  • Charity Right
  • Hidden Humanity

In North Gaza:

  • Team Humanity
  • Al Khair Foundation Gaza
  • Human Aid Advocacy

6. How long have you been working in Gaza?

We have been working in Gaza since 2021 and currently work with multiple partners in Gaza. We were working there before October 7th 2023 by providing monthly food packs for widows and children and regular aid through Great Mosque in Gaza. As well as a Gaza Home Renovation Project. That has all of course stopped since October 7th 2023.

7. How many trucks go into Rafah?

Since Rafah was bombed, we do not send trucks.

8. What issues do SWAN face?

At this time, the main issue we face as a charity is from the lack of understanding from people who don’t understand that it is not easy to provide aid in a war zone. This is unlike other war zones and much unlike disaster relief projects.

Donors need to trust that we are one of the only charities that have been vetted by the UK government and have a license and we do display video footage of all our work within 14 days. Which larger charities are unable to do even. We strive for transparency even in this situation where it is difficult to film and document whilst people’s lives are continuously destroyed and access to internet network and other things is much more difficult for our partners on the ground however we have been delivering high quality footage.

9. What documents are needed for supplying aid in Gaza?

Each project has a proposal, license and agreement documents in place for the buying and distribution of aid.

10. What is the process from beginning to end of providing International Aid from London to Gaza.

Donations > Project proposals from partners > Bank Transfers > Receipts of bank transfers > Procurement/accessing supplies > Distribution to beneficiaries > Reporting - videos, photos, written reports.
